Established Student Exchange Between Skopje and Duisburg - Indication of Vibrant Bilateral Cooperation
May 22, Duisburg - A Cultural and Educational Bridge: The Student Exchange Between Duisburg and Skopje Begins
The city of Duisburg has welcomed the launch of a unique educational project, marking the commencement of a student exchange program between the Macedonian capital Skopje and Duisburg. The initiative officially commenced with a warm welcome extended by the city's first mayor, Frau Edeltraud Klabuhn, at the historic town hall.
Students from Duisburg-Mitte Comprehensive School extended heartfelt hospitality to their counterparts from the partner school "Vlado Tasevski" in Skopje. The organizational duties on the Duisburg side are entrusted to teachers Verena Scholz and Goce Peroski, while Sanda Pulevska accompanies the Macedonian delegation. Heads such as Michaela Gerlach-Zimmermann from Duisburg-Mitte Comprehensive School stress the significance of intercultural education in everyday school life.
This exchange is the culmination of diligent cooperation among various actors. FDP councilwoman Kira Schulze-Lohoff has championed the project from the outset. Harbin Vejseli, also an FDP member, established contact with Macedonian entrepreneurs residing in Duisburg, whose monetary support played a substantial role in realizing the exchange. The Honorary Consul of the Republic of North Macedonia in Düsseldorf, Holger-Michael Arndt, has also thrown his support behind the project.
The student exchange symbolizes the burgeoning camaraderie between North Rhine-Westphalia and North Macedonia. The exchange not only encourages intercultural dialogue but also reinforces civil society ties between the two regions. Schulze-Lohoff expressed her hope that the exchange extends beyond a one-time event, serving as the foundation for long-term connections between students from both nations who grow together and learn from one another.
The educational and diplomatic developments in Skopje have enabled this exchange, including the resolution of the naming dispute in 2019 (Prespa Agreement), improving Skopje’s international standing and opening opportunities for deeper academic exchanges and integration with EU programs. This exchange aims to foster mutual understanding between students from diverse backgrounds, provide access to various educational perspectives and resources, reinforce North Macedonia’s path toward EU membership, and encourage multiculturalism in Skopje.
In the long run, recurring academic exchanges can lead to joint research projects, faculty collaborations, and institutional partnerships. They help break down stereotypes, contribute to reconciliation, and generate economic benefits for both cities. Successful exchanges can exert an impact on future educational and foreign policies, fostering German-Macedonian bilateral relations and supporting North Macedonia’s integration into the EU.
In essence, the student exchange between Duisburg and Skopje serves as a platform for cultural, academic, and diplomatic enrichment, with long-term implications for both cities and their broader international relations.
- This student exchange between Duisburg and Skopje, fostering mutual understanding and intercultural dialogue, also serves as a platform for promoting education-and-self-development, as students learn from different perspectives and resources.
