Emergency Care in Early Childhood Classrooms
At St. Stephan Kindergarten in Hilgertshausen, young minds are being introduced to the basics of first aid in a fun and engaging way, thanks to a collaboration with the local Hilgertshausen Fire Department's "First Responders" team.
The preschool children in the Foxes group were given a unique opportunity to learn about safety concepts and simple first aid practices that are age-appropriate and easy to understand.
During the session, the children learned how to recognize an emergency situation, the importance of staying calm, and how to call for help or get an adult's attention when someone is hurt. They also practiced basic wound care, such as cleaning small cuts and applying bandages, in a playful and hands-on manner.
The First Responders team demonstrated the application of bandages on fingers, elbows, and knees, as well as on legs and arms, during the practice of more serious injury treatments. The children were shown how to protect themselves and others from danger, and they gained an understanding of the role of firefighters and first responders in helping people in emergencies.
Through interactive activities and demonstrations, the preschoolers were able to gain early awareness and confidence in safety and first aid principles without being overwhelmed by complex medical details. This approach helps build a foundation for responsible and safe behavior from a young age.
Two members of the First Responders team visited the preschool and provided hands-on training for the children. They showed the children a new technique for turning a simple band-aid into a special finger band-aid, which the children found particularly exciting.
The visit from the First Responders team was a valuable experience for the preschool children at St. Stephan Kindergarten. They were able to learn practical first aid skills that will help them in the future, and they gained a greater understanding of the important work that firefighters and first responders do to keep our communities safe.
During the interactive session, the preschoolers were introduced to the world of science, as they learned about health-and-wellness through first aid practices. This experience also served as an introduction to education-and-self-development, as the children gained confidence and understanding about fitness-and-exercise safety. The First Responders team's visit provided a fun and engaging approach to learning these essential life skills, setting a strong foundation for the children's future health, safety, and personal growth.
