The Haryana Board of Secondary Education (HBSE) has unveiled the new syllabus for Class 12 Philosophy, effective from the academic year 2025-2026. The syllabus offers a comprehensive overview of Indian and Western philosophical traditions, integrating both classical and modern ideas.

Syllabus Breakdown

The syllabus is divided into ten theoretical units, each carrying specific marks. Here's a summary of the units:

  1. Indian Philosophy and its Schools - 10 marks
  2. Buddhism and Jainism Philosophy - 10 marks
  3. Nyaya and Vaisesika Philosophy - 10 marks
  4. Samkhya and Yoga Philosophy - 8 marks
  5. Bhagwad Gita and Vedanta Philosophy - 8 marks
  6. Rationalism, Empiricism, and Kant's Critical Philosophy - 6 marks
  7. Aristotle's Theory of Causation - 8 marks
  8. Proofs for the Existence of God - 6 marks
  9. Realism and Idealism - 8 marks
  10. Theories of Punishment - 6 marks

A practical/internal assessment worth 20 marks is also included in the syllabus, making a total of 100 marks for the Philosophy subject.

Unit Details

Each unit covers key philosophical concepts. For instance, Unit 1 delves into the meaning and nature of Indian Philosophy, common characteristics, classification into theistic and atheistic schools, theory of Rita and Karma, and the Four Purusharthas (Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha).

Other units explore Buddhism and Jainism Philosophy, Nyaya and Vaisesika Philosophy, Samkhya and Yoga Philosophy, Bhagwad Gita and Vedanta Philosophy, Rationalism, Empiricism, and Kant's Critical Philosophy, among others.

Chapter-wise Topics

The fourth chapter of the syllabus is on Samkhya and Yoga Philosophy, covering topics such as Theory of Three Gunas and The Eight fold Practice. The fifth chapter delves into Bhagwad Gita and Vedanta Philosophy, discussing topics like Karma Yoga, Savadharma, and Lokasangraha.

The third chapter focuses on Nyaya and Vaisheshika Philosophy, covering topics such as Theory of Pramanas and Theory of Padartha. The sixth chapter explores Rationalism, Empiricism, and Kant's Critical Philosophy, delving into Rationalism - Theory of innate ideas and John Locke's Theory of Substance.

Exam Format

The Question Paper Design for Class 12 Philosophy includes Objective Type, Very Short Answer Type, Short Answer Type, and Long Answer Type Questions. The total marks for the Question Paper Design are 80 marks.

Key Concepts

In Aristotle's Theory of Causation, Form and Matter are significant concepts. The cause-effect relationship is a part of Aristotle's Theory of Causation. The theory includes the theory of Four Fold Causation (Material Cause, Efficient Cause, Formal Cause, and Final Cause).

The nature of God, various proofs for the Existence of God, including the Ontological Argument, Teleological Argument, and Cosmological Argument, are covered in Chapter 8: Proofs for the Existence of God.
