Discussion Event #6 on Freethought History: Exploration of Charles Bradlaugh's Career and Ongoing Importance, featuring Bob Forder (November 4, 2025)

In an exciting development for history enthusiasts and those interested in political activism, the National Secular Society is hosting an online seminar on the life and legacy of Charles Bradlaugh. The seminar, titled "The Career and Continuing Relevance of Charles Bradlaugh," will take place on 4 November at 7 pm UK time via Zoom.

Bob Forder, the National Secular Society's historian, will be hosting the seminar. Forder, a former history teacher, has made significant contributions to the society and the field of freethought history. He is also a bookseller and freethought book collector, and the publisher of the Freethinker via GW Foote & Co. Forder played a pivotal role in organising the seminars and suggested their inception.

Charles Bradlaugh, a prominent figure in freethought, radical, and working-class politics in the UK, founded the National Secular Society in 1866. His political career spanned approximately 25 years, from 1866 to 1891. Bradlaugh campaigned for freedom of speech and publication, fought for the individual's right to control their fertility, and struggled for five years to take his place in the House of Commons.

Bradlaugh's name may be largely forgotten today, but his contributions to politics and society remain significant. His tireless advocacy for secularism, free speech, and individual rights continue to resonate in contemporary debates.

Registration is required to secure a place at the webinar. To register, click here or on the image below. You can also read Bob Forder's articles for the Freethinker to gain a deeper understanding of Bradlaugh's life and work.

Join us on 4 November to learn more about Charles Bradlaugh and his continuing relevance in today's political and social landscape. This is an event not to be missed for anyone with an interest in history, politics, or the fight for individual rights and freedoms.
