National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) Expands to Cyprus

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) has announced the establishment of its Cyprus branch, marking a significant development for higher education and cooperation between Greece and Cyprus. The new branch is scheduled to begin operating in October 2025.

The NKUA Cyprus branch will be primarily based in Cyprus, with around 70% of faculty residing in Cyprus, and 30% visiting from Athens. Initially, the branch will operate with five departments, including Medicine, Nursing, Economics, Business Administration, and Primary Education. By 2026, the branch is expected to expand to eight departments, with the addition of departments such as Psychology, an English-language Archaeology and Ancient Greek Studies program, Port and Shipping Management, and more.

NKUA students transferring from Athens will receive at least a 30% discount at the Cyprus branch. Tuition fees for the NKUA Cyprus branch will range from €6,000 to €19,000 per year, depending on the program. Scholarships will also be available for students at the NKUA Cyprus branch.

The initiative is supported by the Government of Cyprus, the Church, and local municipalities, with 87% of Cypriots welcoming the establishment of the NKUA Cyprus branch. Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prontzos stated that the arrival of NKUA strengthens the city's role as a regional academic hub.

In addition to serving Cypriot students, the NKUA Cyprus branch will target Greece, the Eastern Mediterranean, and North Africa through international programs. Discussions are underway for a potential university hospital in Cyprus in collaboration with the national health system, which could further enhance the branch's offerings.

The establishment of the NKUA Cyprus branch is considered a milestone for higher education and Greek-Cypriot cooperation. No specific date for the grand opening of the branch has been announced, but preparations are well underway for its launch in October 2025.
