Frederick County Public Schools to Undergo Major Elementary School Upgrades

Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) is embarking on a significant overhaul of its elementary school infrastructure, with several projects planned to be completed by the 2025-2026 school year.

The projects include the replacement of Valley Elementary School and Green Valley Elementary School, as well as renovations for Spring Ridge Elementary School and Ballenger Creek Elementary School.

In addition to these, a new Yellow Springs Elementary School is currently under construction. The new school, set to open next fall, will replace the existing 1957 building and increase capacity by nearly 300 seats to a total of 745. This expansion aims to address the growing student enrollment in the county.

The design of the Yellow Springs replacement will serve as a prototype for future elementary school projects, including Elementary School 41 in New Market, scheduled for the 2026-27 school year.

These school projects are part of the FCPS Educational Facilities Master Plan, a 10-year plan aimed at responding to enrollment growth and facility needs, supported by county and state funding.

FCPS Superintendent Dr. Cheryl L. Dyson is involved in these projects and has expressed enthusiasm about the progress of the new Yellow Springs Elementary School. Dr. Dyson believes these school projects will open pathways to new possibilities and shape bright futures for the students.

Construction management for the Yellow Springs project is provided by MCN Build, with Smolen Emr Ilkovitch (SEI) Architects as project architects.

It's worth noting that FCPS is the fastest-growing school district in Maryland, and these projects aim to accommodate the rapid student population growth. Renovations at Spring Ridge and Ballenger Creek will help update and improve existing facilities for current and future needs.
