Dr. Joseph DiDonato: A Dental Educator Inspiring Confidence in Residents

Dr. Joseph DiDonato, DDS, MBA, is a renowned figure in the dental community of Rochester, New York. Known affectionately by his residents as 'Coach', DiDonato is a self-proclaimed natural teacher with a commitment to patient care and education that spans over four decades.

Born and raised in New York, DiDonato graduated from New York University Langone Health School of Dentistry in 1982. After completing his General Practice Residency (GPR) program at Eastman, he joined two practices in Rochester and began teaching part-time at Eastman.

Dr. DiDonato's teaching philosophy encourages critical thinking in both public health and private practice. He often withholds answers to stimulate his residents to search for solutions independently, finding it fulfilling to watch them arrive at the answers on their own. Thought-provoking exercises, such as asking residents to consider the value of each day in their career, are common in his teaching repertoire.

In addition to dental education, DiDonato has a keen interest in the history of scientific discoveries. His fascination extends to the weight of an electron or the speed of light. This intellectual curiosity is not confined to the classroom; in his free time, he enjoys activities like playing with his French Bulldogs, woodworking, and fossil hunting.

Dr. DiDonato's love for fossils has led him on expeditions across the globe, from Morocco to Turkey, Eastern Europe, Brazil, and China. However, he cannot keep the fossils he finds, as they belong to the country of discovery.

DiDonato's teaching style extends beyond the traditional classroom setting. He encourages his residents to think about potential complications and how to handle them confidently. One of his unique teaching methods is the application of cockpit resource management, a tool used to train pilots, in the operatory to encourage teamwork and learning.

His residents appreciate his teaching style, with Dr. Samuel Chen praising DiDonato's ability to instil confidence in his students. Dr. Sangeeta Gajendra, professor and clinical chief, also commends his regular presence and assistance at the Downtown Center site, which boosts the residents' confidence.

Dr. DiDonato's commitment to community health is evident in his belief in giving back to his community. He consistently makes time to learn new things, particularly in the field of science, and applies these learnings to his dental practice and teaching.

In a rare move, DiDonato wrote his own obituary several years ago, hoping his legacy to be centred around patient care and teaching. His main goal as a teacher is to build his residents' self-confidence and prepare them for their future careers.

Despite his busy private practice, Dr. DiDonato finds time to interact with his residents, feeling a sense of privilege in his ability to do so. His dedication to his work, his students, and his community is a testament to his passion for dentistry and education.
