In North Rhine-Westphalia, the central exams for the completion of Class 10 (ZP10) have commenced. Approximately 148,000 students from about 2,000 schools are taking written exams in German, Mathematics, and English between May 27 and June 5. Oral exams will follow between July 1 and 8, according to the Ministry of Education in Düsseldorf.

Students from Haupt-, Real-, Gesamt-, Sekundar-, Primusschulen, Gymnasien, as well as those in higher classes at Waldorf schools, the Abendrealschule program at Weiterbildungskollegs, and Förderschulen with equivalent instruction are participating in the ZP10 exams. These exams are the stepping stones leading to the first extended school leaving certificate or the intermediate school leaving certificate.

The Central Exams 10 are part of a final assessment process, as explained by the Ministry. Students participate if they have made it to Class 10. Concurrently, many students are also taking their final exams at Berufskollegs, while many trainees who are completing the theoretical part of their vocational training at a Berufskolleg are facing this challenge.

Minister of Education Dorothee Feller (CDU) wishes all the participants success, resilience during the exams, and good fortune.

The ZP10, a significant examination in the German school system, assesses students' knowledge and skills in core subjects like mathematics, German, English, and sometimes other subjects depending on the school type. It determines the intermediate school leaving certificate (Mittlerer Schulabschluss) or the first extended school leaving certificate (Erweiterter Realschulabschluss) in certain regions.

The results of the ZP10 help shape the further education paths students can pursue, with successful completion potentially leading to Realschule (a type of secondary school) or Gymnasium (preparatory school for higher education). Although the ZP10 is a standard exam in North Rhine-Westphalia, variations might occur in its administration or emphasized subjects in different regions, such as in Düsseldorf compared to other parts of the state. However, the core objective remains consistent across the region.

  1. Students in EC countries, such as those taking part in the ZP10 exams in North Rhine-Westphalia, might also find it beneficial to pursue vocational training programs during their education-and-self-development journey, as many trainees are simultaneously completing the theoretical part of their vocational training at Berufskollegs.
  2. In addition to the core subjects assessed in the ZP10 exams, learning valuable skills in vocational training can complement students' knowledge and broaden their prospects for further education in fields like industry, craft, or service.
