Central exams for the end of Grade 10, known as Zentrale Prüfungen am Ende der Klasse 10 (ZP10), have commenced in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Approximately 148,000 students from nearly 2,000 schools will write exams in core subjects—German, Mathematics, and English—between May 27 and June 5. Oral exams will follow from July 1 to 8, according to the Düsseldorf Ministry of Education.

Schools comprising Haupt-, Real-, Gesamt-, Sekundar-, Primusschulen, and Gymnasias, along with those in Grade 11 at Waldorf schools, the Abendrealschule program at Weiterbildungskollegs, and special needs schools with equivalent instruction will participate in the ZP10 exams. These exams are a significant step toward the first extended school leaving certificate or the intermediate school leaving certificate.

The ZP10, standardized written exams, are part of the graduation process. Students must have successfully advanced to Grade 10 to participate. Meanwhile, many students are simultaneously taking their final exams at vocational schools, and trainees completing the theoretical part of their vocational training at a vocational school are also facing this challenge.

Minister of Education Dorothee Feller (CDU) extended her wishes for success, a clear mind during the exams, and good fortune to all participants.

The ZP10 exams are a crucial benchmark for academic standards and help ensure equity and comparability across schools. The results impact the type of school-leaving certificate and eligibility for further education, such as Gymnasium, vocational training, or other secondary pathways. Schools often conduct mock exams and provide past papers for practice. Moreover, students frequently share experiences and strategies through social media platforms like TikTok, where videos about exam preparation and post-exam reactions are common. This system provides a fair and transparent transition to upper secondary or vocational education for all students in NRW.

In the context of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), students enrolled in various types of schools such as Haupt-, Real-, Gesamt-, Sekundar-, Primusschulen, Gymnasias, Waldorf schools, Abendrealschule program at Weiterbildungskollegs, and special needs schools are simultaneously engaging in central exams (ZP10) and vocational training final exams. These exams serve as a significant step towards obtaining the first extended school leaving certificate or the intermediate school leaving certificate, influencing further education opportunities like Gymnasium, vocational training, or other secondary pathways.
