Solingen Sparkasse and Biological Station Launch Biodiversity Education Project for Secondary Schools

Solingen, Germany – The Solingen Sparkasse, a local savings bank, and the Biological Station Middle Wupper have joined forces to launch an exciting educational project focused on biodiversity. Titled "BIDI – Shaping habitats together – Experiencing biodiversity," this initiative aims to engage secondary school students in Solingen with hands-on learning about the importance of biodiversity and the local ecosystem.

Project Overview

The purpose of the BIDI project is to provide students with experiential learning opportunities through practical activities such as habitat creation, species observation, and data collection. The project is designed to foster a deeper understanding of biodiversity and its significance in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Key Components

The BIDI project consists of several modules, including:

  1. Introduction to Biodiversity: Workshops or presentations explaining the concepts of biodiversity, the importance of ecosystems, and local species.
  2. Field Work: Guided excursions to natural habitats around Solingen to observe and document wildlife.
  3. Habitat Shaping Activities: Practical sessions where students help create or improve habitats, such as planting native species, building insect hotels, and clearing invasive plants.
  4. Data Collection and Analysis: Students collect data on species presence or habitat conditions and learn basic ecological monitoring techniques.
  5. Reflection and Presentation: Opportunities for students to share their findings and experiences through presentations or reports.

Registration and Participation

Secondary schools located in Solingen can participate in the BIDI project by contacting the Biological Station Middle Wupper directly to express interest and receive materials. Registration deadlines are usually ahead of the school year or specific program period, with the current deadline being February 28.

Additional Information

The BIDI project aligns with school curricula and supports practical, outdoor learning. Solingen Sparkasse often provides funding and logistical support to enable free or low-cost participation for schools. The Biological Station Middle Wupper offers expertise and professional staff to guide activities.
