The city of Willich, Germany, and its partner city Zogoré in Burkina Faso have joined forces to reopen schools in the latter, which have been occupied by internally displaced people due to recent challenges in the region.

The project, spearheaded by Salia Kirakoya, a resident of Willich's partner city, aims to provide safe and adequately equipped learning environments for children in Zogoré. The initiative involves building accommodations for the current residents of the schools, followed by their restoration.

Kirakoya, who previously coordinated projects for the "Help for Yatenga" association in northern Burkina Faso, recently visited Willich to discuss the project proposal with Mayor Christian Pakusch. The focus of their conversation was the urgent need to resume school operations in Zogoré.

In addition to school renovation, gardens will be established at each school to teach agriculture and supply the school cafeterias with fresh vegetables and fruits. This initiative not only aims to improve the educational infrastructure but also to promote self-sustainability.

However, due to the current security situation, direct contact with Zogoré has become very difficult, making it challenging to oversee all projects in the region. Kirakoya has returned to the capital, Ouagadougou, with a list of tasks to push forward the project in Zogoré.

Before the meeting with Mayor Pakusch, Kirakoya had a detailed conversation about the situation in the department. She will first consult with the committee in Zogoré about the project proposal before moving forward.

Mayor Pakusch expressed the importance of supporting Zogoré in its difficult situation and emphasized the significance of the partnership between the two cities. For the most up-to-date details about this project and other sister city initiatives, it’s recommended to check the official communication channels of Willich’s city administration or their partnership office.
