Brunswick Expands Neue Oberschule with Green, Barrier-Free Extension

The city of Brunswick is expanding the Neue Oberschule with a new cafeteria area, set to be completed by the 2027/2028 school year. The extension will be barrier-free and connected to the existing building, replacing temporary modular buildings. Mayor Dr. Thorsten Kornblum marked the start of construction on Monday, September 29.

The extension will include 24 general classrooms, five seminar rooms, three chemistry labs, and additional ancillary and differentiation rooms, along with toilet facilities. The existing building will also undergo renovations, adding biology, IT, and physics labs, and enlarging the teachers' room and reception area. The project is a joint effort with Hochtief PPP Schulpartner Braunschweig GmbH, who will operate the building post-completion.

The new building will showcase a climate-friendly news, featuring a photovoltaic system, roof greening, and facade greening. The total cost is approximately 32.3 million euros, with a grant of around 1.5 million euros from the federal government's 'Climate-friendly New Building' funding program.

The extension aims to accommodate 50 more students, providing them with improved learning facilities. The city's commitment to sustainability is evident in the design, which aligns with the federal government's funding initiative.
