Brandenburg Teachers Face Workload Increase, Union Threatens Legal Action
Brandenburg's educators are facing a change in their workload. Starting February, they are expected to teach one more hour per week. The Education and Science Union (GEW) is preparing a legal challenge against this decision.
GEW state chairman Günther Fuchs argues that an agreement on workload reliefs would allow the ministry to claim that teachers' overall workload remains unchanged in court. However, Education Minister Steffen Freiberg has refused to negotiate about reliefs with GEW.
Brandenburg's teachers have had one less teaching hour per week than their colleagues in Berlin since 2014. GEW is asking teachers to record their working hours meticulously, as Fuchs believes they are currently working unpaid overtime due to covering for sick colleagues and additional tasks. Further protest actions are planned following a large demonstration in Potsdam in May.
GEW is unwilling to accept the additional teaching hours without a fight and is considering legal action. Teachers are being encouraged to document their working hours, and more protests are expected.
