Brandenburg Teachers Face Extra Hour Workload as GEW Threatens Legal Action
Brandenburg's teachers face a potential increase in workload, with the SPD/BSW coalition planning to add an extra teaching hour per week from February. The Education and Science Union (GEW), led by state chairman Günther Fuchs, is pushing back, calling the move 'unbearable' and threatening legal action.
The GEW is urging teachers to record their working hours carefully, suspecting unpaid overtime. Fuchs believes that the current 27 teaching hours per week is already too much for primary school teachers. Bildungsminister Steffen Freiberg has assured that solutions are in place to maintain teaching levels for the new school year. However, Fuchs considers suing over the additional teaching hour a viable option. The GEW is unwilling to accept the extra hour without a fight and is preparing a lawsuit, with further protest actions planned following a large demonstration in May.
Brandenburg's teachers may soon be teaching one extra hour per week, despite GEW's opposition. The union is prepared to take legal action and continue protesting. Bildungsminister Freiberg has not directly opposed the additional teaching hours, but has stated that solutions are in place for the new school year.
