Birmingham School Data Leak: Hundreds of Pupils' Details Exposed in Email Mishap
Tudor Grange Academy in Birmingham has confirmed a data leak involving hundreds of pupils' personal details. The school acknowledged a Gmail mishap on Sept. 8, between 9:50 and 9:99 am, which accidentally exposed sensitive information via its Bromcom intranet.
A spreadsheet containing names, genders, dates of birth, and parents' contact information of pupils from Year 7 through Year 11 was shared online with parents via Gmail. The school swiftly recalled the message, disabled the link, and urged parents to delete the file if they had received it. The exact number of students affected is yet to be determined.
The school has engaged its management information system provider to investigate the error and has reported the breach to its Data Protection Officer. It has also pledged to implement stronger safeguards to prevent future mistakes. These measures include enhancing cybersecurity protocols, staff training on data protection, and implementing stricter access controls. The responsible party for investigating the leak is the school's data protection officer in collaboration with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
Some parents remain concerned about the incident and its potential implications for their children's safety. The school is committed to transparency and will provide updates as more information becomes available. It urges anyone with questions or concerns to contact the school directly.
