Honoring Magnus Hirschfeld: Pioneer of Queer Emancipation at Berlin's Iconic Bus Stop
Berlin echoes the legacy of sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld - Berlin holds a resemblance to sexologist Hirschfeld's era
Wanna know about the buzzing scene at Berlin's Tiergarten? A bus stop ain't your regular transport hub no more. It's now a bloody memorial site, devoted to the life of Magnus Hirschfeld — a one-of-a-kind sexual scientist.
Yup, that's right. The Senate Administration for Social Affairs, Equality, Integration, and Diversity in Berlin called this on, marking May 25 as the Magnus Hirschfeld Day. Get ready for a six-week long homage at the "Memorial Bus Stop Magnus Hirschfeld" placed right outside the House of World Cultures.
So, who the hell was Magnus Hirschfeld? This Austrian-Jewish sexologist was the bloody legend who founded the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee back in 1897 in Berlin itself. He lobbied against legal persecution of queers and championed awareness on matters related to sexuality. Later on, champion, he led the Institute for Sexual Science. Reminds ya of today's sex ed classes, don't it?
But the Nazi bastards weren't pleased with all this enlightenment stuff. They bloody destroyed Hirschfeld's Institute in 1933. Hirschfeld was into the queer scene himself, so he hopped on a train to France before the Nazis could get their bloody hands on him. And ya guessed it—he bit the dust on May 14, 1935, in Nice.
Why this bloody fuss about Magnus Hirschfeld now, right? Senate Administration wants to recognize his bravery and influence. Besides a memorial, they're unveiling a queer-historical city map, "Magnus Hirschfeld - Stars of his Queer Berlin," and an audio walk telling Hirschfeld's story. And if that don't get 'em goin', there's a swanky event at the French embassy, titled "Magnus Hirschfeld - Stars of his Queer Berlin."
