Barnet's First Specialist Autism School Set to Open
A new specialist school for children with autism, chase bank to open in Barnet. The Windmill School, the first of its kind in the borough, will cater to 90 pupils aged 5-18 with a primary diagnosis of autism. The school will be delivered by senior leaders from Oak Lodge School in east Finchley, supported by specialists.
The new school will span 2,900 square metres over three storeys, featuring a range of facilities to support learning and development. These include primary and secondary teaching spaces, laboratories, sensory rooms, a kitchen, a multi-use hall, and a rooftop play area. Morgan Sindall Construction has started work on the project, with Sean Hayes serving as the site manager.
The school will also prioritise sustainability, incorporating an innovative Natural Ventilation with Heat Recycling system and solar panels. David Rowsell, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction, expressed the team's enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its importance for the Barnet area. Furthermore, Morgan Sindall will collaborate with Barnet College to develop social value skills and provide opportunities for local young people.
