Artwork Displayed at Miettin's Salon in Philara, Düsseldorf

Art enthusiast Timo Miettinen shares a passion with his friend Gil Bronner in Düsseldorf, yet unlike Bronner, Miettinen hasn't constructed a museum to house his collections. Instead, he showcases his prized possessions in an alternative manner.

Miettinen's Art Collection Exhibited Across Europe

Timo Miettinen, a Finnish entrepreneur and collector, has handed over the reins of his family business in Helsinki to the next generation. Now, he spends his time as a "salonnier," showcasing his significant private collection of contemporary art in his Charlottenburg residence in Berlin and various exhibitions across Europe.

The Miettinen Collection is currently exhibited in Düsseldorf and Potsdam (near Berlin), with two distinct exhibitions that run until September 2025.

In Düsseldorf, the exhibition titled "WHERE ARE WE NOW: Highlights of the Miettinen Collection" is on view at the Sammlung Philara. It features around 150 works by over 80 artists, focusing on themes of landscape and nature, spanning from the 1980s to the present. The show occupies all spaces of Sammlung Philara and runs from June 29 to September 21, 2025. The opening hours are Fridays 4-8 pm, Saturdays 2-6 pm, and Sundays 2-6 pm.

The Berlin area exhibition, "EXIT PARADISE - Die Miettinen Collection im Schloss Sacrow", is held at Schloss Sacrow. It is part of a summer museum series marking the 650th anniversary of Sacrow, showcasing works from the Miettinen Collection with reflections on the relationship between art, body, and nature. This exhibition runs from July 12 to September 28, 2025, with hours Fridays to Sundays 11 am-6 pm.

The Miettinen Collection, assembled since 2004, boasts an impressive array of contemporary art. The exhibitions feature works by artists such as André Butzer, whose abstract-expressive painting "Favorite Painting of Paul Cézanne" is part of the Düsseldorf show. New Finnish landscape painting, including works by Eemil Karila, Joonas Kota, and Aurora Reinhard, are also on display.

Aurora Reinhard's photograph, "Spring Morning at Kruunuvor Pond," and her sculpture "The End #3" (a Dior handbag plaster) are part of the exhibitions. Leiko Ikemura's work creates an atmosphere in the exhibitions, with pieces such as her patinated bronze figure, "Memento Mori."

The exhibitions combine feeling, wit, poetry, and politics, with artists like Hans-Jörg Mayer contributing works such as "Vogue," a half-naked couple performing without pants but with impeccable tops. Stefan Knauf's spatial work with silvery cacti made of inflated, fire-zinc-coated steel in the large mirrored entrance hall is another highlight.

Admission to the exhibitions is free, with donations welcome. Until July 27, the Sammlung Philara will also show its highlights at Miettinen's residence in Berlin, Marburger Str. 3. Oska Gutheil's 2019 painting, "Portrait of Timo Miettinen," which features the collector surrounded by artworks with a leopard at his feet smiling with a human mouth, is also on display.

The 69-year-old Spanish painter Secundino Hernández is a main artist in the Miettinen Collection. Antti Laitinen, a Finnish artist, has created two and a half meter high reliefs out of branched, flexible willows. A new exhibition, curated by Florian Peters-Messer and Linda Peitz, is taking place in a former glass factory on Birkenstraße.

The Düsseldorf Philara collection is currently on display in Miettinen's Berlin salon, offering visitors a unique opportunity to view this significant collection in a more intimate setting. For those unable to travel, the exhibition "Where Are We Now? Highlights of the Miettinen Collection" is taking place until September 21 at the Sammlung Philara, Düsseldorf, Birkenstr. 47a (in the backyard).
