Announcement Regarding the Selection of Julie Lucas for Community Leadership Role
In a significant move for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Julie Lucas has been appointed as the new Vice President for Resource Development, starting in November. This appointment comes as L. Rafael Reif, the President of MIT, expressed his excitement about the leadership team in place, ready to start working towards MIT's ambitious priorities.
Julie Lucas, who previously spearheaded fundraising efforts at the University of Southern California (USC) and New York University (NYU), among others, is stepping into a role that requires navigating new territories. In her new assignment, she will also serve as the Institute Vice President and Secretary of the MIT Corporation, a field she has never worked in before.
At USC, Lucas coordinated a 300-person fundraising staff that serves the university's 15 schools. Her tenure there saw the largest economic-development project in the history of Southern Los Angeles, the University Village, receive substantial funding. In addition, she played a pivotal role in USC's current $6 billion campaign, securing transformational gifts that have helped raise $3.6 billion to date.
Lucas's resume highlights her ability to develop relationships internally and externally, one-on-one and with groups, to create enduring communities. This skill set is particularly valuable for MIT's fundraising efforts, as President Reif emphasises the importance of developing relationships for the Institute's fundraising efforts, creating enduring communities that will support the Institute's mission for generations.
The staff of Resource Development and the Alumni Association, as well as the School Development Officers, have handled the challenges of the year with unfailing professionalism, patience, and grace. This positive attitude, coupled with the exceptional results demonstrated by Kirk Kolenbrander, the current Vice President for Resource Development, has kept the donors of MIT positive and confident.
Kolenbrander, who has demonstrated exceptional willingness, perseverance, and management skills in steering Resource Development through an uncertain time, will continue in his role in addition to his new assignment as Institute Vice President and Secretary of the MIT Corporation. President Reif expressed personal gratitude and admiration for Kolenbrander's service to MIT over the past year.
The fiscal year that ended June 30, 2014, was the second strongest year for philanthropic fundraising in MIT's history. This success, coupled with the appointment of Julie Lucas, bodes well for the future of MIT's fundraising efforts. As the Institute moves forward, the focus remains on maintaining a positive attitude, fostering relationships, and working towards the ambitious priorities set by President Reif.
