In an exciting development for the music community, eleven students from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) have been selected as winners of the 2019/20 UCLA All-Star Competition. These talented musicians will have the opportunity to perform with the UCLA Philharmonia in the upcoming All-Star Concert.

The lineup for the concert is impressive, featuring a diverse range of performances. Alexander Lee, a second-year undergraduate student, will captivate audiences with his rendition of Tomasi's Concerto for Alto Saxophone. Sierra Allen, a first-year DMA student, will showcase her skills on the clarinet with the Artie Shaw Concerto. Khoi Dinh, another second-year undergraduate student, will perform Ibert's Flute Concerto, Mvt. I.

Amanda Lee, a fourth-year undergraduate student, will add a touch of drama with her performance of Kapustin's Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 14, Mvt. III. Natalie Dungey, a third-year undergraduate student, will bring the audience on a journey with Tomasi's "Semaine Sainte à Cuzco" for trumpet.

Michelle Rice, a second-year DMA student, will deliver two songs from Mussorgsky's "Songs and Dances of Death" at the concert. Elvin Hsieh, a third-year undergraduate student, will transport the audience with Chausson's Poème for violin and orchestra.

The winners of the competition were selected by outside adjudicators: composer Liviu Marinescu, professor and chair of composition and theory at CSUN, and Warren Spaeth, past chair, music theory department, Colburn School of Performing Arts and Colburn Conservatory of Music. Six students earned honorable mentions in the competition, and all students received written feedback from the adjudicators.
