In a digital age where trust in journalism is paramount, ensuring the digital safety of journalists is not just a technical issue, but a responsibility that goes hand in hand with maintaining public trust. This is the guiding principle behind a series of specialized workshops held in Cebu, Philippines, aimed at empowering community journalists to navigate modern challenges and improve reporting quality.

The workshops, supported by various organisations including STET-Women in Cebu Media, International Media Support (IMS), Asian Center for Journalism (ACFJ) at Ateneo de Manila University, PLDT Inc., and Smart Communications Inc., offer a unique opportunity for community journalists to enhance their skills and tackle challenges related to digital safety, mental wellness, AI impact, and responsible journalism.

Strengthening AI Skills

With the rapid advancement of technology reshaping newsrooms, learning to use AI tools effectively for gathering, verifying, and presenting news is crucial. The workshops provide practical knowledge on AI tools, helping journalists adapt to these changes and streamline their work, as demonstrated by journalist and media advisor Jaemark Tordecilla.

Enhancing Digital Safety Practices

In an era where cyber threats are a constant concern, the workshops teach practical methods to protect against these threats, helping journalists safeguard their work and personal data. Max Limpag, co-founder of Innopub Media, led sessions on digital security and data protection online.

Addressing Mental Wellness

Recognising the mental health challenges journalists face daily, the workshops raise awareness of these issues and provide coping strategies to maintain well-being. The Bidlisiw Foundation Inc. presented a workshop focused on self-awareness and mindfulness for mental health management.

Promoting Responsible Journalism

The workshops reinforce journalistic ethics to ensure accuracy and fairness, especially when integrating AI-generated content and guarding against misinformation. The goal is to ensure that journalism remains a trusted source of information, even in the digital age.

Roby Alampay, FVP and head of Public Engagement and Corporate Communications Group at PLDT and Smart, expressed the company's commitment to empowering media stakeholders. The workshops align with PLDT and Smart's support for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4: Quality Education, Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

The workshops aim to make journalists more resilient in the digital age, addressing concerns and challenges faced by community journalists and equipping them with the tools they need to maintain high standards of journalism in a digitally evolving environment.
