Building Bridges: Montreal's Peace-Building Initiatives
Montreal, a city known for its diversity, is hosting a series of events aimed at fostering inclusion, peaceful conflict resolution, and open discussions on sensitive subjects.
One of the key figures behind these initiatives is Brian Bronfman, a white man from a prominent Jewish Montreal family. Bronfman, committed to peace and non-violent conflict resolution, has made significant strides in promoting dialogue and understanding.
In 2017, Bronfman, alongside his wife and a co-author, founded the organisation 'Peace Now' to amplify their influence on the peace process. The organisation plays a pivotal role in organising the annual Peace Days, a 12-day event that offers over 92 activities, including webinars, workshops, toolkits, guides, and religious dialogues.
Bronfman's long-standing ties include Palestinian Amal Elsana Alh'jooj, the founder and general director of the Montreal-based organization PLEDJ. Their friendship, built on trust and frequent social interactions, extends beyond their presidential debates on topics such as genocide, terrorism, ethnic cleansing, and Zionism.
On September 26, Dina Souleiman, a Syrian-born Muslim who directs the Welcome collective, will speak at the synagogue Emanu-El-Beth Sholom in Westmount as part of a special event titled 'Building a Better Future. United for Peace'.
Other initiatives include a podcast exploring Francophone diversity, a blog focusing on menstrual equity, activities providing a guide on public speaking, and offerings for yoga or meditation.
Citizenship Youth and Elections Quebec are also offering a toolkit on civic participation. These initiatives aim to engage Montrealers in building a more inclusive and peaceful community.
Bronfman believes that peace is built through healthy relationships that allow connections with anyone. He emphasises the importance of these discussions but believes that their personal relationship and trust are more significant than their presidential debates or discussions.
In a joint message issued on October 7, 2023, Bronfman and Alh'jooj called for peace and solidarity amidst the Hamas attack in Israel, reiterating their commitment to peaceful dialogue and understanding.
Montrealers are invited to join these initiatives, rejecting threats, hatred, and the glorification of violence in presidential debates about the Middle East conflict. By participating, they can contribute to a more peaceful and inclusive city.
