2023 Global Event Focused on Advancements in Pollution Clean-up Technology and Studies

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to host the 2023 EPA Decon Conference, a biennial event that brings together subject matter experts from various organisations to discuss and advance decontamination efforts. The conference, themed "Advancing Progress through Science and Collaboration," will take place at the Hyatt House/Historic District in Charleston, SC, USA, with in-person participation encouraged, but oral presentations and plenary discussions also being live-streamed for those unable to attend on-site.

The conference, which initially started as a workshop focusing on decontamination, cleanup, and associated issues for sites contaminated with CBR materials, has expanded its scope over the years. In 2010, it transformed into a full-fledged conference, attracting almost 500 attendees at the 2021 event.

The 2023 conference will focus on innovations in decontamination technologies and methods, science-driven strategies for environmental remediation, collaborative efforts between government agencies, academia, industry, and communities, and addressing emerging contaminants such as PFAS and legacy pollutants through coordinated research and policy initiatives. The conference will also cover topics such as Sampling & Analysis for Biological, Chemical, or Radiological Agents, Decontamination for Biological, Chemical, or Radiological Agents, Materials and Waste Management, Biothreat Contagion Research, Information Sharing and Infrastructure Security, Decision Support, Hazard Response, Applications of Social Science to Decontamination, Sampling, and Risk Communication, Water Sector Resilience, Oil Spill Response, and Analysis for Coastal Operational Resiliency.

The conference agenda can be viewed on the official EPA Decon Conference website. The event will consist of technical sessions, including keynote, oral, poster, and Technology Café demonstrations. All presenters will be required to provide their talks in-person, and the Poster and Technology Café sessions will not be streamed or recorded.

For questions about the conference, please visit the EPA Decon Conference website or contact EPA_Decon@the Decon Conference website. Additionally, an Emergency Response Research Webinar Series is available for those interested in related topics.

The EPA Decon Conference has been organised and hosted by EPA's Office of Research and Development's Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response (CESER) since 2005. The conference aims to align with EPA's general approach to tackling environmental contamination challenges by integrating research, technology, and multi-party cooperation. The goal is to advance decontamination expertise and capacity through science and collaboration, ultimately improving risk management, public health outcomes, and regulatory frameworks.

  1. The 2023 EPA Decon Conference, known for its focus on science, collaboration, and decontamination efforts, will cover topics such as waste management, water sector resilience, oil spill response, and analysis for coastal operational resiliency.
  2. In addition to the in-person conference, the EPA has also organized an Emergency Response Research Webinar Series for those interested in related topics like decontamination, risk communication, and information sharing.
  3. The conference agenda for the event, which encourages in-person participation but also live-streams oral presentations and plenary discussions for remote attendees, can be viewed on the official EPA Decon Conference website.
  4. The conference, while initially focused on decontamination, cleanup, and associated issues for sites contaminated with CBR materials, has expanded its scope to include general news, education and self-development, medical-conditions, and sports, as well as the finance, technology, and environmental-science sectors.
  5. Furthermore, the conference will discuss innovations in decontamination technologies and methods, science-driven strategies for environmental remediation, and collaborative efforts between government agencies, academia, industry, and communities to address emerging contaminants like PFAS and legacy pollutants.
  6. The EPA Decon Conference, now in its 18th year, has been organized and hosted by EPA's Office of Research and Development's Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response (CESER) since 2005, with the goal of integrating research, technology, and multi-party cooperation to advance decontamination expertise and capacity, ultimately improving risk management, public health outcomes, and regulatory frameworks.
